Nonlinear Simulation of Drift Wave Turbulence

چکیده
In a two-dimensional version of the modified Hasegawa-Wakatani (HW) model, which describes electrostatic resistive drift wave turbulence, the resistive coupling between vorticity and density does not act on the zonal components (ky = 0). It is therefore necessary to modify the HW model to treat the zonal components properly. The modified equations are solved numerically, and visualization and analysis of the solutions show generation of stable zonal flows, through conversion of turbulent kinetic energy, and the consequent turbulence and transport suppression. It is demonstrated by comparison that the modification is essential for generation of zonal flows.

Multi-scale Interaction between MHD, Turbulence and Transport in Tokamak Plasmas
The recent achievement in the simulation study of multi-scale interaction among MHD, turbulence and transport is reported. Firstly, we discuss the formation and collapse of Internal Transport Barrier (ITB) in Tokamaks. The meso-scale structures are generated by three-wave interaction among drift wave turbulence. These structures interact each other, which generate the global mode around barrier...

We use a hybrid model of drift-kinetic electrons and fluid ions to treat electromagnetic drift-wave turbulence in an inhomogeneous collisionless plasma confined by a strong external magnetic field. The electrons are described in terms of a distribution function in five-dimensional phase space, and the basic nonlinear equations are solved numerically on a massively parallel computer using explic...
متن کاملEnergy dynamics in a simulation of LAPD turbulence
Energy dynamics calculations in a 3D fluid simulation of drift wave turbulence in the linear Large Plasma Device [W. Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 (1991)] illuminate processes that drive and dissipate the turbulence. These calculations reveal that a nonlinear instability dominates the injection of energy into the turbulence by overtaking the linear drift wave instability that dom...
متن کاملMulti-scale interaction among neoclassical tearing mode and drift wave turbulence
Abstract. The multi-scale interaction among the tearing mode and the drift wave is investigated using reduced MHD model including the electron viscosity. It is newly found that the fluctuating bootstrap current in the Ohm’s law gives rise to a new instability for the regime where the tearing mode is stable. The stability depends on the dissipations and kinetic effects. This result implies that ...
متن کاملDrift Wave versus Interchange Turbulence in Tokamak Geometry: Linear versus Nonlinear Mode Structure
The competition between drift wave and interchange physics in general E-cross-B drift turbulence is studied with computations in three dimensional tokamak flux tube geometry. For a given set of background scales, the parameter space can be covered by the plasma beta and drift wave collisionality. At large enough plasma beta the turbulence breaks out into ideal ballooning modes and saturates onl...
